How Long Does a Sore Throat Last?

We have all experienced the dread of waking up with a sore throat, also known as Pharyngitis. It can often be the first sign that we are getting sick. What can start as a little scratchiness in the throat can quickly evolve into painful swallowing, swollen glands, and much more. But, how long does a sore throat last?

Pharyngitis can be a sign of a wide range of illnesses or issues. It isn’t always certain how long a sore throat will last. When connected to a viral and bacterial illness, a sore throat will usually be present for 5-7 days. However, there are many possible reasons for Pharyngitis. It is important to know its causes, what it means, and how best to treat it.

What Exactly is a Sore Throat?

A sore throat is a common symptom of many illnesses or acute conditions. It is caused by inflammation in the throat, also known as the pharynx. This can occur due to a variety of bacteria, viruses, stress, or substances floating in the air. Often, a sore throat is a benign symptom that goes away on its own. But, it can also be a symptom that needs more direct medical attention. While it isn’t always a serious sign, it is important to notice if there are other symptoms present

Is a Sore Throat a Sign of Covid?

Many people wonder, is a sore throat a sign of Covid? Yes, a sore throat is a potential symptom of Covid-19. But, only 5-10% of patients experience an isolated sore throat. It is much more common to experience a fever or other symptoms alongside Pharyngitis. If you are worried about Covid-19, get yourself tested and talk to your doctor about possible treatment plans.

Can Allergies Cause Sore Throat?

Your sore throat may be caused by allergies. Allergies are known as a reaction to particles that are floating in the air. Pollen, dust mites, mold, and pet dander are common allergens. This can create an irritation in the throat that leads to dryness, sneezing, and a cough. Over-the-counter medications such as Claritin and Zyrtec can be helpful for these symptoms.

Other Potential Causes of a Sore Throat

  • Pertussis (Whooping cough)
  • Chickenpox
  • Measles
  • Mononucleosis (Mono)
  • Influenza (Flu)
  • Common cold
  • Croup (common childhood sickness)
  • Strep throat
  • Smoking or closeness to smoke
  • Excess screaming or singing

Symptoms of Pharyngitis

Painful swallowing
Red and swollen tonsils (sometimes with white patches of pus)
Swollen lymph nodes in the front of the neck

Possible Treatment

Lots of rest and sleep. This allows your immune system to help you heal.
Avoid screaming, singing, and talking loudly.
Drink warm liquids such as tea, broth, or warm water. Avoid caffeine.
Gargle saltwater using warm water.
Humidify the air to help with dryness in the throat.
Consume hard candy or lozenges.
Stay away from cigarette smoke.
Try Marshmallow root, licorice root, or slippery elm. These are forms of alternative medicines that can help to ease the soreness.
Antibiotics if the illness is bacterial
