How to Stay Healthy While Traveling

How to Stay Healthy While Traveling

Going on vacation should always be a pleasurable experience. But unfortunately, things like unforeseen illnesses and pre-existing health conditions can turn a fun getaway into a disaster very quickly. If you are planning to travel to another country, your risk of becoming sick during or after your stay increases even more.

How to Stay Healthy While Traveling: 5 Useful Tips

There are several things you can do to prevent getting sick while you are traveling. Here are five of the most useful tips for people traveling abroad or across the country to ensure healthy travel.

Practice Deep Breathing Techniques

If you are a nervous flyer, you may become very anxious while on the plane. But simple deep breathing techniques can help to calm your nerves and get your breathing under control. Start by breathing in through your nose and out through your mouth. Count to five each time you inhale and exhale. Deepen each breath slowly and then work your way up to counting to ten with each breath. Do this until you feel your body relax.

Do Not Sit on the Aisle Seat on Your Plane

Getting the window seat on the plane may be more desirable than ever once you learn about the risks of an aisle seat. While an aisle seat provides better access to the aisle, there aren’t many other benefits. If you are on a long flight, you won’t rest as well when the other passenger passes by you to get to the aisle. According to are cent study, you could even be exposed to more germs while sitting in the aisle seat.

Always Pack a First Aid Kit

Taking the time to pack a few necessary first aid supplies could save you a lot of aggravation during your trip. This is especially true if you are traveling with small children. Be sure to pack some acetaminophen or ibuprofen for headaches and minor aches and pains. Depending on where and when you are traveling, you will also want to pack insect repellent that contains DEET to prevent unwanted bug bites. Hand sanitizer, bandages, disinfectant, and antibiotic ointment are also useful items to have in your kit.

Be Sure to Get Enough Rest

Getting enough sleep is one of the keys to safe travel. It can be challenging to get the right amount of sleep you need while traveling across time zones. The excitement of the trip mixed with jet lag can make it hard to fall asleep at night, but it’s essential to rest and conserve your energy so you will be able to enjoy your trip fully and not become ill afterward.

Stay Hydrated Throughout Your Trip

Hydration is another key to staying healthy. It can be easy to forget to drink your daily recommended amount of water while exploring the big city or sightseeing with your family. But drinking plenty of water can help combat many of the issues people associate with travel, such as fatigue, brain fog, and headaches. Take a water bottle with you wherever you go and sip on it throughout the day to help prevent dehydration.
