Tips for Staying Healthy During Flu Season

Wondering how long the flu season is? It typically lasts from December to February, so you might want to start preparing now.

When it comes to staying healthy during the 2020 flu season, it is in your best interest to get vaccinated. If you would like to schedule an appointment, be sure to read our website for more information.

Even though getting vaccinated is the best way to prevent the flu, there are other strategies that can help you stay healthy. Our team at BASS Primary Care does not want to see you get sick, so be sure to read this quick article we put together just for you!

1. Get Vaccinated

Getting vaccinated is crucial to staying healthy this flu season. Many community events offer flu shots, sometimes even for free. Be sure to keep an eye out or talk to your primary care physician about getting a flu shot.

2. Avoid Contact with Others

If someone is sick, you can stop the spread of germs by avoiding close contact with them. When you are sick, you should do the same and avoid others.

3. Wash Your Hands

Always wash your hands! Doing so will protect you from the germs that you naturally pick up during the day. Washing your hands can prevent many other illnesses and help keep you clean and healthy this flu season.

4. Cover Your Mouth

Always be sure to cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing. It is better to do so into a tissue, so keep some on hand this flu season. Teaching kids to cough or sneeze into their elbows at an early age can help prevent the spread of the flu.

The flu is a respiratory illness, meaning that it can be spread through the air when you sneeze or cough. By covering your mouth and nose, you can stop the spread of the flu to others.

5. Don’t Touch Your Face

This can be a difficult habit to break, but it helps to ensure good health during the flu season. Germs can be spread when you touch a surface that a sick person touches, then rub your nose, eyes, or mouth.

If you notice yourself touching your face often, be sure to increase the amount of times that you wash your hands during the day. That way, you lower the odds of getting sick. Still, trying not to touch your face at all is a better alternative.

6. Practice Good Hygiene

If you practice good hygiene during the day, you lower your risk of getting the flu. You should disinfect frequently touched surfaces in your house, get enough sleep each night, drink water, and get exercise.

If you can do all of that, you feel much healthier overall and have a strengthened immune system.

7. Eat a Healthy Diet

Foods that are rich in the vitamins C and E are thought to help boost your immune system. You can get vitamin C from citrus fruits and orange juice. Vitamin E can be found in different kinds of nuts and sunflower seeds.

Eating less sugar is also helpful. Large amounts of it can cause your immune system to react more slowly.

These are the most effective ways to prevent the flu virus from spreading to your home this flu season 2020. Follow these tips and get your flu shot to stay healthy this flu season.
