Winter Sports: Why Sports Physicals Are Needed

With the winter sports season upon us, it is that time of year again for student-athletes to get their annual sports physicals. This physical exam, performed by a medical professional, determines whether it is safe for a student to participate in a certain sport or activity. The exam will include a physical examination and a review of the athlete’s medical history, complete with questions about any history of illness in the athlete and his or her family members.

Depending on the results of the exam, the physician will either clear the athlete to participate in sports without restriction, clear the athlete to participate in sports without restriction but with a recommendation for further evaluation or treatment, or not clear the athlete pending further evaluation. Whether your child plays an organized sport or enjoys solo activities like skiing or snowboarding during the winter months, a sports physical is the best way to ensure full and safe participation and keep your child healthy and injury-free.

Why Are Sports Physicals Important?

A sports physical can help student-athletes learn about and deal with health issues that could potentially interfere with their participation in sports. Sports physicals are important even for healthy student-athletes. Regular checkups can give parents peace of mind about their child’s health, and if there are any serious health problems, a physical can be life-saving.

“Sports physicals are needed to make sure athletes compete safely-- for their own health -- and for the health of others,” says Kevin deWeber, MD, a family and sports medicine physician in Washington state. Sometimes physicians uncover conditions during a sports physical that may restrict an athlete’s physical activities, such as allergies, asthma, or high blood pressure. In some cases, sports physicals uncover more serious issues like heart murmurs or undiagnosed heart conditions. With early detection, these issues can be addressed quickly and appropriately.

Sports Physicals Cost

If you are planning on having your child get a sports physical for a winter sport, you are probably wondering how much it will cost. Depending on where you go, sports physicals can range in cost from as little as $25 to as much as $110. On average, you can expect to pay approximately $59 for a sports physical at your doctor’s office or local urgent care clinic.

Many schools offer sports physicals on-site in the gymnasium, which may be a more convenient option. However, even if your child has a sports physical at school, it is a good idea to schedule an exam with your child’s regular doctor as well. Due to concerns about COVID-19 exposure, many parents would prefer to visit a clinic than a school gym for their child’s sports physical.

Sports Physical Near Me

School sports help keep kids fit and allow them to socialize and make friends with other students who share similar interests. However, student-athletes could put their health or safety at risk if they participate in winter sports without getting a sports physical. Sports physicals are important to assess an athlete’s general health, fitness level, and risk of injury. With that in mind, even if your child’s school does not have a sports physical requirement, it is still highly recommended that you schedule one before your child starts a new sport or season.
